Benny helping with the PYO flower garden
Ahhh the last several days have been too hot and I am so grateful for the cool down today. Tuesday haled a heat advisory and we had CSA pick-up; the show must go on, as they say. The crew was able to be flexible and start 3 hours earlier than usual in order to harvest and finish CSA prep before the heat melted us. A handful of plants perished, but mostly the crops seemed to fair pretty well with just a few burnt leaves. Phew! And the pigs swam in their giant mud puddle and sailed through the heat like real swine champions. Through all of the heat, we have been picking away at getting irrigation up and running amongst all the fields. It’s a tedious job and not my favorite. Although I love having irrigation, the pipes and valves always seem to be in the way of other tasks and make mowing, cultivating and planting much harder. Plus, we can only run a teeny tiny section of the farm at a time for 1.5hours. Keeping track of open valves and run times, it’s like orchestrating a subway station. We do have a new well now (yay!) that will hopefully allow us to water more area at one time, but we have yet to get it hooked up to the main lines. Time. It all takes time….

Ok that’s it for now — I’ve gotta feed those pigs! And seed carrots and mulch the tomatoes and harvest …..
