High Tunnel, Raven, full of Greens for Winter Eating!

Full of gratitude, this post will highlight a few things that have made me smile recently!

First off — look at these greens!  GORGEOUS!! and delicious, they will no doubt be the highlight of your plate.  Lettuces, chard, spinach, herbs and kohl rabi, we are so proud of them!  Growing in the high tunnel is a lot of extra labor, and when we are blessed with this color, we all do a little dance : )  As long as it’s sunny, it’s one of my favorite places to be in the winter; surrounded by the smell of earth and growth, even when it’s snowy and cold outside.  Real bounty these unheated greenhouses can produce; a feast for both the eyes and belly!

Alvin getting some Love at our Employee Celebration Dinner

Secondly — have I mentioned how much I loved the crew this year?!  So positive and hardworking, even through the heat and hard days.  What a joy to meet these lovely people each day knowing they would put their heart into whatever needed doing.  I should do a calculation of how much food they helped produce, but I don’t have that number as of yet.  I will say, however, in one day over 3000lbs of roots were harvested, washed, bagged and put into storage for your winter delight.  Farm work is no small feat, nor the “dream” that most people have when they think of farming.  That being said, with the right crew, a good attitude and an open heart for seeing beauty, it can be very fulfilling. THANK YOU, crew, for making this season INCREDIBLE.

Benny Working on the Straw Trailer

Thirdly — I am grateful for BENNY.  What a doofus and excellent farm dog.  We unloaded 300 bales off straw from this trailer and Benny knew there was a stowaway mouse.  It took us just over an hour to unload, and he sniffed and jumped and pounced the entire time, until the last bale was moved and “voila”!  There was indeed a mouse.  It’s tail is hanging outside Benny’s lips in this photo : )  We were sad to say good-bye to Simon, our 17 year farm dog veteran, this summer.  Benny has been a softener of heavy hearts and certainly a zany addition to our lives!  We love that many of your have become his best friend this year and are happy to serve “Benny’s veggies”.

Last, but certainly not least, — I am grateful for YOU.  Buying from Little Ridge keeps the farm alive!  Literally.  Everything we do is with you in mind.  From being kind to the earth through our growing practices, to picking out the most flavorful seeds to grow; from offering multiple ways to get our produce to writing this Blog — we are YOUR farmers!  And we love you.
