Well, hello, gorgeous. Yes I am talking about you, you succulent eggplant and peppers! Generally Zach is the house chef but I got motivated from a conversation in the CSA barn with a shareholder about baked eggplant. And since the eggplant need so much olive oil, I decided to throw in some sweet peppers to sop of any excess. On the stovetop is a pot of tomato sauce, doused with onions, garlic, parsley and CA bay leaves. yummmmmmm. Perfect for a fall dinner.
This time of year is SO GLORIOUS. Not just because it’s my birth month but because look at this weather! W . O. W. Wonderous October Weather. Look at that, who knew October had it’s own acronym? I mean, yes, yesterday was raw and rainy, but today? So perfect. We are hoping it holds through early November as we have loads to harvest. This last bit of rain has nicely sized up the cabbage and carrots and the touch of frost will sweeten everything too! We planted SO MUCH cauliflower and it is SO CLOSE to making a head. It was transplanted during a hot and dry spell and even though we babied it as much as we could, cauliflower is a bit finicky so it “stalled”. We have decided that maybe if we don’t check it, it will make a head. In any case, it may not end up in the summer shares, but in the WINTER shares! How fun would that be?

The Androscoggin Gleaners came today and harvested the last of the plump green tomatoes. It’s so great to know that when we have extras, the food can be taken to those in need. They also use it for fun cooking classes, teaching those new to the kitchen how to use fresh product.
NEXT week is our last summer CSA pick-up. Although we are sad to not see folks for a few weeks, the break is welcomed so that we may dig in and get all of the root crops in for hungry winter bellies. We also have garlic to plant, parsnips and strawberries to mulch and field clean up to do. Sound fun? We would love your help!
