Raspberry Bonus Surprise

Every year our raspberries tend to produce a few fall berries, but THIS year.  Wow.  They are loaded.  I mean look at how many berries are still to ripen on that cluster!  While, they are much appreciated (and so very delicious), I am not sure why it is happening and I hope it is not making it harder for the plant to produce during its regular scheduled fruiting time (July).  I suppose it has something to do with the warmer early fall weather?  In any case, it is preparing for us for when we DO have a fall raspberry harvest.  We have 2 beds prepped and ready for planting next summer.  We have decided to plant two fall bearing varieties so we can have more pyo in September!  Yay!  We will keep you posted….but we are hoping to have some fruit for your picking this time next year!

Fall Equinox

This Sunday brought us equal hours of light and dark.  The fall colors and energy have been delightful this year.  Today we are getting a soft inch of much needed rain.  We do have irrigation set up, but it’s just not the same, plus it takes hours more labor a week.  I am always amazed at how plants continue to grow even through the days of lesser light and warmth.  In many cases, the plants are happier (thinks roots, cabbage and greens).  I know we as a crew are all lovers of fall and we have been having so much fun bringing in the fall harvest.  So much fun that this blog never gets written on Monday in time for Tuesday’s pick-up!
