February Love

Hoping this month finds you well!  It’s a month with longer and brighter sun, blue skies and red hearts.  Here at the farm, February is our favorite month to harvest spinach.  It’s like candy hearts (but with a wonderful flavor, not a weird chalky one).  The winter’s cold has strengthened its carbohydrates into a sugar super power and the flavor will knock your socks off!

This month is also the month we will start seeding seeds in the high tunnels for early spring treats like lettuce, herbs and radish.  We still have some bed prep to do, as it was where the tomatoes lived last summer and the soil is a little weedy and lumpy. But soon it sill be smooth, weed-free and happy to welcome new seeds.

The rest of my February will also be spent buttoning up office work.  We are so excited to offer 50% off CSA shares for SNAP recipients through Maine Harvest Bucks again this year. Our online sign up system is very close to being able to accept SNAP payments which will streamline the payment process.  If you have any friends or neighbors or community members you know who might be interested in our CSA, send them our way!!

Handmade Goat’s Milk Soap

Have you smelled the new wonder at pick-up the last couple months?  Our friend, Joann, makes these lovely gems here in Lisbon.  She joined our CSA in 2008 and participated in our workshare program for at least 5 years (working 2 hours/week in exchange for a share discount).  Her dream was to be more self sufficient.  Now she has gardens, pigs and goat’s!  She is working on more products in her line-up, be on the lookout : )
