The watermelon patch looks gorgeous this year; lush with leaves and full of flowers, but not a ton of fruit. I am not exactly sure why they are so late but hopefully they will make their way soon. You can see a tiny fruit starting to the upper right of the front flower, it is about the size of a quarter ; ) There will be cantaloupe in the share this week though!
It is the time of year for onions! This year’s are large and juicy. We wait for the tops to die back and then harvest them into crates and hoist them up into the barn to cure. Curing them allows us to store them well into next spring. This year’s harvest is definitely a winner. I love growing onions, I think they are beautiful, but I do not love eating them so much. However this weekend, we had a night of camping and had peppers and onions with some sausage and the onions were so so good…I even had seconds!
This Week’s Bounty: lettuce, chard, beets, hakurei w/ greens, peppers, tomatoes, cukes, zukes, summer squash, broccoli/broccolini/cauliflower, onion, garlic, dill, cilantro, basil and a melon (corn next week!)
